Conditional Connection
Interactive Light Sculpture
PET Tubing, Zip Ties, LEDs, 3 Sonar Sensors & Arduino
2025
Conditional Connection is a public sculpture that transforms communal movement into living color—activating individual branches in red, green, or blue, then blossoming into complex light patterns as participants connect. Designed for high-traffic civic settings, the piece champions playful participation while reflecting on how human connection—like structure—can be conditional, synthetic, and fleeting. Its modular, branching form delivers striking visual presence and invites open-ended interaction grounded in co-creation.
Under the Hood
The sculpture is structured using translucent polyethylene tubing and heavy-duty zip ties. Despite each branch being uniquely shaped, all three have the exact same quantity of materials—including hundreds of hundreds of individually addressable LEDs. Proximity sensors mounted on the pedistal register distance and movement, triggering lighting behaviors that evolve in real time, simulating involvement within our plastic culture.
Completed Armature
27 x 27 x 27in model prior to LED & Pedestal Installation
I’m thrilled to present this model for a 2.5x upscale for the new nyc park!
Since the indoor model is 27x27x27in.,
my proposed outdoor height is 67.5in.
then add a 16.5in. pedestal (for housing hardware),
my total proposed LxWxH = 67.5 x 67.5 x 84in.
